Missed Encounter @ The Apple Store

// July 13th, 2007

No matter how big NYC might be & no matter how many millions of people live here, it’s really a small world after all.

You always end up running into people you know randomly on the street, in da club, or elsewhere. I’ve had moments where I ran into up to 3 people I hadn’t seen in over a year within a span of 5 minutes - without even leaving the sidewalk I was on!

Well tonight, yet another case in point to put in the annals of my life. But this one serves as a reminder that no matter how hard you might try to disappear on a former lover, you’re never entirely in the clear if she lives in the city too…

I cruised over to the Apple Store to return one of the iPhones I bought 2 weeks ago. I tried to sell them, but that didn’t work out since there was such a large supply, so I sent one to a friend in LA & decided to get rid of the other one. I figure I’ll buy one in the 2nd or 3rd generation… anyway, that’s beside the point.

As I descend down the clear plexiglass spiral staircase into the store, a young lady catches my eye from behind. Well, well, well, it turned out to be Miss C, a tall, slender 23 year old lass who had the pleasure of meeting me a few weeks ago at a party ;)
Flashback: A friend of mine invited me to an outdoor patio party at some rich real-estate guy’s pad. His friend is the guy’s party planner & she told him to bring some male friends since the guy’s parties usually have too many women - models & such. It seemed too good to be true, and of course, it was.

The place wasn’t too far away, so I decided to walk there, only to eventually get drenched in a sudden T-storm. When I finally got there, there were only a few people there. The rain definitely put the party plan on hold. There ended up being about 10 of us there, having a decent time, drinking the guy’s liquor. There were only 2 girls in attendance however…

Of course, one of them would be mine. We got to talking & after a while, left the party, which was dead, for an impromptu dinner, followed by some drinks at the nearby Hudson Hotel. Miss C started holding my hand as we looked for a table, so I knew it was game on. We had a drink or two, talked about French films & then split to my place to watch some Godard, wink wink ;) Miss C ended up spending the night. It was a pretty fun night as we made out on the couch & made our way to the bed, although a tad weird since she kept wanting me to tickle her pink if you get what I mean ;)
The next morning she went to work & I finally texted her about 6 days later - the Swingers rule! - to see if she wanted to meet up. Turned out she was going to see Annie Hall in Bryant Park & I was also planning on meeting a bunch of friends there as well. After the movie ended - which by the way, was one of these quintessential NY moments - we met up by the fountain for a few minutes. I told her I was going to a party at the G-Spa, but she didn’t want to come it being a Monday school night & all. I told her we’d see each other again soon, but I didn’t really mean it. I was over her by now.

Fast forward to the present: My first reaction to seeing Miss C was to head towards the cashier hide my face. I am rocking the 3-piece goatee right about now, so she might not have even recognized me, but still pursued a strategy of avoidance. Call me cowardly if you will, but it’s a strategy that’s worked for me in the past for better or worse.

While waiting in line, I realized that it wasn’t so random that she was at the Apple Store b/c she works at Tiffany & Co., which is right around the corner on 5th Avenue. I also thought about saying a hello on my way out if she was still there. A change in a tried & true strategy, you say? Could it be? Ahh, of course not! When I left the store, I passed by her again, but I wasn’t feelin’ it. She wasn’t as cute as I remembered in my drunken mind. So it was that I headed back above ground & biked away off into the sunset… Another missed encounter!
